The Different Versions of Religion. ‘Carnival Row’

Today I continue the subject of Carnival Row. After seeing next two episodes I think I must say few words about Christianity and morality because that’s what was striking my eye this time.

The scene showing how merciful people can be is the one from the hospital. But the 3rd episode starts like many stories from Middle Ages – heads on pikes. I can say that real historical stories had to inspire this series but it also shows the better version of past – Nazi would never think about helping Jewish the way it is shown in this series.

By the way I must mention another scene and the shot that impressed me a lot with its beauty – that’s the scene of burying heads of leaders of Black Raven. Vignette in the middle of the screen… That light, that gentle fog in the background… Work of art!

Ok now I need to start talking about religion… It’s the title subject in the end! The idea of revenge and fight that appears thanks to Vignette, reminds me about Jewish beliefs. Pix is the old race that has their own tradition, religion. And there is also the one who is praised by people and he almost looks like Christ. That’s why closing all fantasy creatures in ghetto fit here so perfectly. We have here history and moral rights that correspond with our real world and our real religions.

But it’s not all so simple! Sophie, the merciful woman, is also planning a revenge on bad men. This is not how the good Christian supposed to be like! Or that kind of believer that is pictured in this series…

The 4th episode gets totally different but not quite. It’s all about communism in half and who can know better than people who were born in the era of communism? I obviously talk about my parents… Because, you know, I’m Polish… Well, if you think it’s only a political matter then you’re wrong. Because communism was also some kind of religion and believing in God was actually forbidden then. You can’t believe in two gods at the same time! Work and common ownership above all! Also look at these names = Leonora and Lenin. Isn’t it quite similar?

Today I feel like it’s all but there are definitely more religious references in this series. It would be hard to name and describe them all! At least I tried…

What will be next? I don’t know! I must see next two episodes to decide… And when it comes to the tomorrow post topic… It will be about my today visit in the museum so… art.

Until the next time!
