‘The Bone Season’ Series by Samantha Shannon

I wrote my bachelor’s thesis based on The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon in 2020 and now, after 3/4 years, I came back to her books to read The Bone Season series, and this is what today’s blog post will be about.

At first let me give you all book titles, and then I’ll tell you more about this story.

  1. The Bone Season
  2. The Mime Order
  3. The Song Rising
  4. The Mask Falling

Bonus books:

  1. The Dawn Chorus (Book 3,5)
  2. The Pale Dreamer (Book 0,5)

Samantha Shannon studied literature just like me, but in the different part of Europe, and that’s all that differs us from each other. As an educated writer I honestly love her books, and I can’t wait to see next three to come out one day. Because you know, the The Bone Season is her debut book that came out in 2013, so over ten years ago, and at the same time it’s the name of the whole series that is planned to be made of 7 books! Just four were published by now, and there are such two novellas that I’ve read after main four, and I recommend such a order for you too, really. It’s easier to understand them after reading novels at first.

So, The Bone Season is a dystopian story about the future where clairvoyants like the main character Paige Mahoney must live in the underworld. It’s also a fantasy, science fiction with a little paranormal twist and it’s simply full of little bloody crimes. In the end it’s the underworld…

I started reading the first book in 2020 probably, but I came back to the first page in 2023 and read all next books in just few months. The beginning may seem hard to survive but when you get used to it all, this story gets really interesting and if you like fantasy books, then you really must read these books. I don’t want to spoil anything, so I hope I encouraged you enough… But you know, there is a lot of action in these 4 books! It would be even hard to write it down in a from of synopsis…

As I’ve already mentioned, my bachelor’s thesis was about The Priory of the Orange Tree. It’s a totally different type of fantasy. The world here is based on “romantic vision of Middle Ages” and yes, that’s the literal title of my work! Last year also brought the prequel entitled A Day of Fallen Night. I haven’t read it yet, but I’m planning to do it soon… And I recommend to check out this story about dragons as well…

That’s all today and tomorrow I will go back to university topic because I’d like to write such a little random post about education, you know.

Love, A.A.
