Today post will be about all films & series that are made based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s books, but it will also be about these books itself as well. If you have been searching for a place where you can learn more… Well, you simply found it!
If you’ve been reading my posts for a while, then you already know that I’m Polish and I’m lucky to read The Witcher in the original language. I haven’t read them all yet, but I want to make this post to already share all my knowledge… So, at first let me give you the list of titles that come from this dark fantasy world.
- The Last Wish (Ostatnie życzenie)
- Sword of Destiny (Miecz przeznaczenia)
- Blood of Elves (Krew elfów)
- Time of Contempt (Czas pogardy)
- Baptism of Fire (Chrzest ognia)
- The Tower of Swallows (Wieża jaskółki)
- The Lady of the Lake (Pani jeziora)
- Season of Storms (Sezon burz)
- Claws and Fangs (Szpony i kły)
And well, this is the order of reading I recommend as well.
First two books is a collection of short stories and they are rather random, but the main character – The Witcher (Wiedźmin) is holding it all together. The first story that has this title was also the first ever story that was written by Andrzej Sapkowski for the competition. He didn’t win then (1986), but it was the start of everything and fans of this story can only be thankful. And these stories are inspired by popular fairy tales, Slavic Mythology and Middle Ages.
Next 5 books are novels and it’s called a saga. It kinda continues the thread of the last story from the second book, and that’s why I think it’s important to read it in such an order.
Season of Storms is a book that was a surprise for many people, and some say that Sapkowski shouldn’t continue this story. I haven’t read this book yet, but I heard that it shows how the life of Jaskier and Yennefer look like without The Witcher… Update. I have just finished reading it, and it’s not true! It’s the story that can be treated as the prequel, but you absolutely shouldn’t read it at first… I recommend at the very ending – after the saga… While the last book is a collection of short stories that take place in this fantasy world, but they are written by other authors. This book is the fruit of the contest that was organised to celebrate 30 years of The Witcher. Some of those stories are printed in Claws and Fangs now, yep.
If you already know few of these books, then it’s time to watch stuff produced by Netflix! At least that’s what I did…
There are three seasons of The Witcher already, and I won’t be hiding that Polish readers are unhappy about the thing that this story turned into. I feel like it’s a very chaotic variation, but I still really enjoy this series. The biggest accusation is the fact that everything is simpler there on the screen, and creators of the show say that it’s for Americans to understand this story better. Well, I saw comments that Americans would feel offended if they only heard such things! Also, the action of this series is going really slow. You can peacefully read first 4 books until the next season comes… But then it’s possible that next books will be all put in one season or two…
Except that, there is a spin-off about the origin of Witchers, and that’s something totally new. I mean you won’t find it in books! I obviously talk about The Witcher: Blood Origin. I think it’s a pretty cool concept, but I can’t see how much it has to do with the main series now… But I recommend to watch it all anyway though.
The last thing to mention is an anime film which is not as bad as I thought before seeing it. It’s called The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf and it’s about someone who is like a father to Geralt of Rivia. And it’s quite romantic… So, it’s also a spin-off and prequel at the same time. Watch it to find out why!
So, this is where the today’s blog post is ending. I don’t know if I’ll be able to still write in the nearest future, but I really wish I could continue and finish all my current projects… You can find out more checking out my social media if you only want to.
The next post I’m planning to drop on Wednesday and I want it to be about Harry Potter books and movies this time.
Greetings!
