Men Silhouettes, Romances and Feminism. ‘Carnival Row’

Today post will be less related to things happening in episodes 5&6 of Carnival Row but now quite. I’d like to talk about men, romances and feminism. There are many strong men like Philo and others are softer like Ezra. Jonah is hard to describe because he’s standing somewhere in between just like Agreus. In the end, we can say that every man in this series is a different kind. When it comes to romances & relationships, then we have here Sophie & Jonah, Vignette & Philo, Vignette & Tourmaline, Agreus & Imogen and Ezra & Imogen. I’d like to talk about each pair now. And about feminism in the meantime.

Episode 5 surprised me with death of Sophie and the canceler Jonah. Who would think that lovers would die like this? Also, those guillotines remind me of French Revolution and the way many queens ended when kings had enough of their wives… If you know the history of Great Britain, then I’m sure you understand this illusion!

Let’s go back to the romance of Sophie and Jonah. I’m honestly surprised that this thread is ending so suddenly, in my opinion. It’s not romantic at all but it’s quite Shakespearian to see them end their lives quite in the same time. What is new here is definitely the feministic motive. Sophie is the woman who wanted to use Jonah to improve the situation of women. I find this idea very interesting… What do you guys think?

Now let’s talk about the second romance for a minute. Philo here is a knight who wants to save his love! Vignette isn’t a princess but a badass woman but the plan of rescue is still very romantic anyway. And she would like to run away with her old friend Tourmaline instead of being grateful! That’s something that nobody could expect… A very modern love triangle, indeed!

The third romance is Agreus & Imogen. Who this couple of lovers may recall in the real world? In my opinion it may be a slave and an aristocrat. For many years people were forbidden to look for love in the social class that would be different than than the one where they were born. Even if someone bought themselves freedom and earned working hard, it was just seen badly by noble people. The truth is that they forgot that their ancestors were just the same centuries ago. In Middle Ages there were knights and then this class turned into nobility. They were in other words soldiers. Centuries were passing by and in the end some people forgot where they really come from. I mean without a glorious activities, they would never be rewarded by kings or queens…

The next pair that we have here is Ezra & Imogen. He is the one who is trying to protect old rights of men protecting women. He’s ready to do anything to save his sister. The problem is that she doesn’t need saving and he doesn’t want to see it… Ezra doesn’t have a lover here but he definitely loves his sister and he’s kinda jealous because he’s not the one Imogen needs the most anymore. Now she has her own man… But does she really have Agreus?

Let’s talk about feminism now. Why Lenin is a woman in this series? Because there would be no feminism without Leonora! She is the one who decided to fight for rights of poor and she is the one who inspired others. She is the one who brought the change. That’s a very strong sign of feminism…

The last subject worth discussing is the motive of women who are monsters, vampires, mantis, femme fatale etc… It’s nothing new and I won’t say more if you haven’t seen 6th episode yet…

And this way that’s it! Tomorrow I will review the new song by Demi Lovato. It came out today but I will do it tomorrow in the morning…

Until the morning then!
