Today at midnight we met again (I mean on Friday 27th January). But this time to watch the 3rd music video from Midnights by Taylor Swift, the latest work from the top artist these days.
Lavender Haze is a perfect song for the New Year’s Eve. I say so because this vibe perfectly fits this time of the year. I literally had it stuck in my mind right then and it’s all I could think about. Lavender (my favorite color before white when I was a teenager) and haze (what new year will bring?). This year is just beginning so it’s a perfect time to put out the video like this.
Click below and watch the video that I’ll be reviewing it in a minute (or actually three…).
I think that I can just use three words to describe this music video – lavender, haze and mystery. I think that’s obvious and that’s why I’d like to discuss other details here and find their metaphorical meaning.
What does the vinyl of Mastermind means? Is it just the fact that first and last song from Midnights are inspired by the same thing (or the same person)? Or it’s an Easter Egg meaning that it may be the next music video? What about the weather and the “guy on the screen”? It can resemble Midnight Rain and Karma. Yes, I’m trying to say that one of these three songs may be the next single. These references were put into the video for some reason. Well, I personally believe that Midnight Rain is the most likely to be a single. This song is now in the Top 3 on Spotify. Taylor is a wise woman and I’m sure she sees how much love this track is getting so I think it’s an obvious move to use it one day.
I was thinking also about those fishes. I’m Pisces and it’s all I could conclude… But in the meantime I found out that Joe Alwyn is also Pisces just like me! It would be a pretty reference then. Very romantic but… Can it be still something more? Can it be a teaser related to Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) as well? The spirit of this video tells me so. And the color (purple).
Ok but what about those clouds and starry nights? The moment when walls fall down and there is nothing but fishes and the universe around? Let me refer to my own poetry here. When love is real it’s like “stepping into the Black Hole”. Your loved one makes you melt until there is nothing left anymore. Because that’s magic when you feel your soul and his becoming one… He fell from the sky right into your arms… He makes you feel like you’re sleeping on the cloud… Ok that’s also a reference to someone’s music as well… The same experience can inspire multiple works of art, why not?
In my opinion videos from Midnights can be placed like:
- Bejeweled
- Lavender Haze
- Anti-Hero
If you don’t agree with me, I would love to read your opinions in comments!
Update. It’s July and I must say I was wrong! Karma was the last single! You can check it out here:
It’s also a new version of this song with Ice Spice. In other words it’s a remix. And I must say that I love all music videos from this era. They’re a different league! And I think Karma, Lavender Haze and Bejeweled may be her best videos ever…
The end of update. Further part of the post was originally written in February.
Now I’d like to say few words about Midnights songs in general. I haven’t review it yet so I must finally do it! Well, at first I didn’t like this record but each listen made me like it more and more. Here I present songs I didn’t mention in this post yet and I can quite name them favs at this moment (I mean since November).
Listen to the album here if you don’t know these songs yet:
Maroon
This song not only reminds me of Red but it’s also the whole story. It’s about how love was sweet, happy, red and how it ended sadly because you don’t talk anymore. It’s also perfect for moments when you remember blushing and how you lost someone and you know you would never be able to forget about them…
Snow On The Beach
It’s a happy song but for me it’s always been a sad song but lately it inspired me to go by the river to take photographs. The post about that walk is coming soon btw.
I can imagine a sad girl coming home alone. How someone who wanted you in their life could so suddenly change their mind? Or maybe you were wrong? Or maybe you misread something? I guess she did but she still can’t understand it fully. But what matters the most is… The new beginning is a process. Sometimes it’s good to be wrong.
You’re On Your Own, Kid
This is the hardest lesson learned for me in 2022. Whatever you dream about… You’re in fact alone with it. Some people may believe in you and others don’t but you are the one who must believe in it the hardest. Without it you may never make it. Nobody else will do it for it.
Labyrinth
This song is about being hurt and realizing you were wrong thinking it was the end. It’s never the end as long as you both are still breathing. You may never know when he wants to surprise you… And then you’re just falling in love again instead of falling apart. Also, this is probably one of the most lyrical and poetical songs from Midnights. If you can feel poetry… Then Labyrinth by Taylor Swift must be playing in your headphones.
Sweet Nothing
This is a sweet piano song. It’s about living in a materialistic world where everybody must give to get something. But sometimes people only want to get sweet nothings… What it may be? Just love and time. Nothing more matters. And who wrote those piano parts? William Bovary = Joe Alwyn. So sweet, I know!
The Great War
Now I’m finishing watching 4th season of Downton Abbey (yes, I will review it when I fully finish watching it) and this song makes me think about this series. But also the story that is presented here in this song is my 2023 prediction. All that was bad is gone in the end. You survived The Great War and now everything can be nothing but better. And those vows… What it might mean?!
Bigger Than The Whole Sky
This song is also melodically so lyrical. It’s about losing someone way too soon and you know there’s no turning back anymore. You just lost them for the last time. But they’ll just stay the best what you’ve ever known. Because they were bigger than the whole sky…
Glitch
You can’t say who he is to you. But when something’s wrong you always run to him and his arms are always open for you. You thought you have no chance… But in fact in ends with a romance… Let’s dance, witches.
Dear Reader
How a writer may not love this track? The spirit of it is just perfect. It’s about being hurt and believing that you can’t give your readers the best advice then. Because you see world differently when you go home and it’s empty there. It’s like don’t listen to me, I don’t know what I’m saying. It’s a perfect song when you’re planning an escape. Because this vibe is like you’re running and suddenly slow motion attacks you…
Hits Different
I got Midnights (Lavender Version) CD this Christmas and this song is the part of the tracklist. I love it! Melodically it reminds me songs from the vault from Red (Taylor’s Version). It’s about the feeling you get when you lose the one. When it was a special love… It can be nothing but hard when it ends. Also, it’s about sadness related to bars and clubs. This kind of sadness that makes friends leave you so you’re truly alone in the end. And you still hope the person you miss the most comes home in the end. It’s like you’re obsessed or haunted and nothing else matters to you anymore. “It hits different this time. (…) It hits different ’cause it’s you”.
So, I quite wrote a story here… I hope it’s as much mysterious as Lavender Haze… Let me know what songs are your favs and what they mean to you. I’m really curious.
The next post will be about places worth visiting in Kraków and Zakopane! Yes, I’m still working on it… All I can say now is… You can treat it as a guide book with pictures, you know…
Greetings!
AA
