Today I’m making the written version of the review of Holy Fvck by Demi Lovato. The written version because I’ve already done this last year for the spoken review on my YouTube channel.
I’m slowly finishing writing about things you heard me speaking about last year. I mean just two such reviews left. When Season 3 comes out on YT this summer/fall… Well, I’ll be editing some posts that have already appeared here to add YT links, I guess… So, the situation will turn around eventually…
Who Demi is, you wonder? That’s a super talented person (this strong voice didn’t change at all since she was 15!) who started her/their (you can use both but I chose the first option) career as a kid. I’ve known her since Camp Rock and she was one of my favorite singers and actresses since then. There was a time when Miley Cyrus was my no. 1 and she was the no. 2; and there was a time when she was my no. 1 and Taylor Swift was my no. 2 and I guess it turned around during the pandemic because of re-recordings and folklore. Yes, I feel quite obsessed about Taylor’s music these days… But new music from Demi is always a pleasure to listen!
First Demi’s album came out in 2008 and since then there were 7 more releases. That’s quite a number! And honestly, I love all of them!
- Don’t Forget (2008)
- Here We Go Again (2009)
- Unbroken (2011)
- Demi (2013)
- Confident (2015)
- Tell Me You Love Me (2017)
- Dancing With The Devil… The Art of Starting Over (2021)
- Holy Fvck (2022)
You can listen to Holy Fvck below and let me know what you think. Share your favorite songs maybe?
You can watch the video where I’m talking about the title record below and in a minute I will answer for questions you’ve already seen in the post about Rush! by Måneskin.
* How the title and cover are responding to each other and the content of the record?
Title and cover are definitely responding to each other. In the whole record it’s possible to hear many biblical references so all fit perfectly here. Also, I think the choice to make it the leading theme was her tough experiences. Because she’s been through a lot. Just like Christ.
* What kind of genre is it?
That’s rock. And that’s a come back to roots! Demi was 16-17 years old when her first two albums came out. It’s a good way to feel younger for her and her listeners (I was 10-11 years old right then so maybe not quite!).
* What singles are promoting this record?
Skin Of My Teeth, Substance and 29. The first title is very intriguing to me, the second one is definitely my fav and the third song is also very nice and happens to be the biggest success here. Skin Of My Teeth is a song about the tough lessons that Demi had to learn lately. Substance is about looking something that is deeper and more meaningful than the rest of things. 29 is about the situation when your friend is 12 years older than you and you’re definitely too young for them but they don’t mind the age difference. Now when you’re the same age, you start to see that you would never think of spending time with 17 year olds… So, it’s not your problem but that person’s who had such fantasies… Also, Skin Of My Teeth and Substance and have good strong bridges. 29 seems to have a cut ending and I would rather end this track repeating the title number but that’s just my opinion.
* What other songs can be called as favorites?
Eat Me feat. Royal & the Serpent. Such a good heavy medal song. I’ve never heard Demi like this before! And the lyrics is referring to being a sexy woman. If you liked me like this better, you can eat me. I can’t forbid you anymore, Demi says. The next song that I absolutely love is City of Angels. It’s so good and clever! Listen and you’ll know what I mean… Come Together was the love at the at the first listen of the teaser. It’s about the secret love – my fav theme. 4 Ever 4 Me is a song inspired by Iris by Goo Goo Dolls. I’m not the one who likes it… And it’s about finding the one.
* What score does this record deserve to get?
8/10. I’m not able to say the title aloud and there is one song that I didn’t like at first so that’s why it’s not 9/10 or 10/10. But I love it anyway!
* What songs from the record can be placed in Top 5?
My current Top 5 goes like:
- Come Together
- 4 Ever 4 Me
- Substance
- City of Angels
- Eat Me
But I’ve also had Bones stuck in my head today…
So, that’s all for today. I’m not sure what to do tomorrow because there is the premiere of the new season of the series I like and the release date of the new song… Two posts at once? Or maybe I need to change my plans and publish these two posts tomorrow and on Saturday instead of ones that I planned at first? Well, we’ll see!
Greetings
AA
