Historical Fiction vs. Alternative History

I bet this post title sounds familiar… Yes, it’s a post that I promised to write one day and here is it today! It’s about genres – historical fiction and alternative history – but it’s also important to mention the series Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story and my novel Great Lady’s Diary.

At first let me remind you my video where I talked about this.

Have you watched “Queen Charlotte” and wondered what genre it is…? I did! It’s like… This is a historical fiction because it’s kinda teaching us about a real life that queen Charlotte had (because such a queen really lived) but also there are many elements that would be impossible in those historical times… So, it’s also an alternative history… But I guess it’s more an alternative history in the end because I think it’s more for fun… What do you guys think?

When I said that these two genres are similar and sometimes it’s hard to give a book only one genre, I meant… Imagine the fantasy book that is happening in Middle Ages. There are many historically real things about it but why don’t we say that it’s an alternative history then? In the end it’s inspired by historical era. It’s full of truth and it’s a collection of variations inspired by this particular period…

So, this is how I felt about Queen Charlotte while watching it and that’s why I started to compare it with Great Lady’s Diary.

I don’t want to talk about other things here but this series is definitely a romance and it’s impossible not to remember about it, you know. It’s quite tragic to see how love grows and suffers. I talk about George’s illness right now… And it’s once again why it reminded me of my own story. These little things make it similar.

If you were reading my previous blog, then I’m sure you understand my dilemma… Because I want to show the real world but I’ve also felt inspired by real people to write my own version of the past… So, I guess that playing and messing with genres is simply my thing but I can also see that it’s a sign of the times we live in…

So, I honestly believe that one story can fit to many boxes called genres because it’s just a theory. And we all know that sometimes expectations (in this case definitions of genres) can be a bit deceiving…

So, that’s all but I guess that I could keep talking about this subject…

Tomorrow I’m starting the new blogging series! This time it will be Only Murders In The Building Season 3 and I feel like it’s another perfect example of what I was talking about here today – it’s a detective story, crime and comedy at the same time. It sounds like a grotesque a bit… Well, whatever!

Love, A.A.
